AmeriCorps

AHS’ second AmeriCorps Program started in 2006, and we currently have ten full-time AmeriCorps members. Our members are assigned to five programs at AHS: Passages Charter School, the Family Health Center, the LEAF Program, Community Health, and WIA Youth Program.

Members are engaged in a wide variety of education and health-related services. They tutor children and youth in three different after-school programs (WIA, Passages Charter School and the LEAF Program), work with special needs children at Passages, help adult immigrants acquire English and computer skills and preschoolers acquire school-readiness skills, do HIV prevention workshops, and enroll clients in WIC, a program that gives low income mothers access to nutrition classes and healthy food.

AHS AmeriCorps members also work as a team to accomplish projects and participate in trainings. Since August, 2007, members have catalogued books for the library at Passages Charter School, volunteered at a local shelter, and most recently helped organize a health fair at our Community Health Program. Thus far, members have undergone three trainings including CPR, AmeriCorps Opening Day, and Justice Talking, a discussion series funded by the Illinois Humanities Council that uses literature to reflect upon civic engagement.
