Our goal in the LEAF program is to provide
low-income immigrants the educational services they need to flourish in an
English-speaking environment. To do this, we offer the following
activities:
Adult Education
The Literacy Education for
Adults and Families (LEAF) offers English as a Second Language classes to
low-income adult immigrants living on Chicago's north side. Our
three English classes are for
Beginning and Intermediate-level students. We also offer classes in
Basic Computer Skills, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel to members of
the community wishing to acquire and improve their computer skills. As part of our adult education
program, we offer a weekly parenting class. These classes are
designed to help parents strengthen their families and make literacy a
part of their daily lives. The course covers issues such as parent-child
separation, health and nutrition, discipline, and child development.
Child Care
For parents with preschool
children who are enrolled in our ESL classes, we offer an educational
child care program for children ages 1-5. We have a ratio of
approximately one teacher per four children, and do many activities to
prepare children for kindergarten and preschool. On a daily basis,
children participate in art projects, story time, music and play.
After-School and Summer
Camp
We also offer an
after-school program for school-age kids from local elementary schools.
From Monday to Friday, children in grades K-6 can get homework help from
tutors, do reading activities and arts-and-crafts, play games, and have a
daily snack. From June-August, we run a summer camp for school-aged
kids whose parents are enrolled in our program.
Family Activities
Each week, families come together for Parent
and Child Together (PACT) activities, which provide parents and children
an opportunity to play together, create art projects, enjoy story time and
visit the library. This class is for families enrolled in the LEAF
program.
Hours of Operation
We are open from Monday to
Friday, 9:00-5:00. Our ESL classes and child care run daily from
9:15-1:00. We offer a morning computer skills class, from 9:15-11:30, and
an afternoon class from 2:15-4:30. Our after-school program is from
Monday to Friday, 3:00-5:30.
