The Mental Health Program in Uptown was the first service at the agency provided in 1978. Programming is designed to meet the psychological and social needs of Asian immigrant and refugee communities. The program is Medicaid and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) certified. In 2001, we opened our Chinatown Office to provide mental health services to the Chinese Community. Services in Chinatown are offered in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. As part of our ongoing commitment to providing mental health education, we provide quarterly workshops on various mental health topics to increase awareness of mental health issues in our Chinatown community.
Our goal is to provide culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate services so that clients can achieve independent and productive lives, and integrate effectively into their communities. Our services are offered in Khmer, Vietnamese, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bosnian, Thai, Hindi, Lao and more.
ADULT MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING SERVICES
This program is for clients ages 18 and over. Individual, Group, Couple and Family Counseling are offered to cope with chronic mental illness, social isolation, acculturation, domestic violence issues. and intergenerational conflict. These services are also offered at our Chinatown office and Family Health Center.
CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING SERVICES
We provide counseling for youth ages preschool - 17 and their families. The goal is to help resolve social, emotional, behavioral and academic problems. These services are also offered at our Chinatown office.
The Child and Adolescent program is currently participating in the Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health Evidenced Based Treatment Initiative. All of our Child and Adolescent staff are participating in intensive training in Behavioral Parent Training, an approach that has been proven to significantly reduce child behavior problems.
PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES
Our psychiatrists provide evaluation and medication monitoring and our bi-lingual staff offers interpretation for our clients and psychiatrists. This service is offered for both our Adult and Child & Adolescent programs.
PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION SERVICES (PSR)
This group service provides a supportive environment for Asian immigrants with chronic mental illness so that they can learn to manage their symptoms, develop practical life skills, focus on their recovery and integrate effectively back into their communities.
Members enrolled in our Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program (PSR) have access to culturally competent, individual, group and family counseling and case management services provided by our Mental Health program. PSR services include:
- Expressive therapies encourage PSR members to non-verbally express themselves through movement, music and art. The expressive therapies serve as effective communication tools to help members overcome language and cultural barriers.
- Groups are curriculum-based and interventions are focused on Evidenced Based Practices.
- PSR relies on members' input to design effective programming. Monthly meetings provide a structured forum for feedback, while individual conversations guide daily activities.
CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES
We help our clients have access to necessary case management and community support services, building on their needs, preferences and strengths and providing them linkage to other AHS programs and outside resources.
