Started in 2001, Passages Charter School focuses specifically on the needs of

immigrant and refugee students. Passages offers a tailored educational program focused on high academic standards, serving students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.  We are an English Immersion program, with our entire staff trained in English as a Second Language strategies.  ESL strategies are integrated throughout the curriculum.  Currently, 220 children are enrolled in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5.

OUR UNIQUE FEATURES

Small Class Size

Passages has small class sizes, allowing for more individual attention and education that is matched to each student’s needs. In most of our classes the ratio is less than 15 children to one teacher.

High Academic Standards

We expect every student to perform at or above grade level. Teachers support students to help them achieve their goals. Over the past several years, our standardized test scores have shown that we are one of the best-performing small schools in Chicago.

Longer School Day and School Year

Passages offers a longer school day and longer school year – providing more educational programming. Our school doors open at 7:30 for before school care, and we have an after-school program that runs until 6:00 each evening, which helps assure working parents that their children are in a safe and educational environment.

Effective and Committed Teachers

Just like our students, our diverse teaching staff hail from all over the world and speak many languages. More than 75% of our teachers have Master’s Degrees, and we also have a strong support staff, including several AmeriCorps members who assist children needing extra help to succeed in school.

Strong Parent Network

Passages has a very active parent/teacher group that supports all school activities. As a division of AHS, Passages can assist parents with programming such as adult literacy classes, computer training and employment services, and medical assistance.

Mental Health Services

The Mental Health Program at Asian Human Services Services collaborates with Passages Charter School to help children who are struggling to succeed in school. Our Child and Adolescent Counselor works with Passages children individually and in small groups.

Passages Hours of Operation

The school day at Passages runs from 9:00-3:00. We are open daily from 7:30-6:00, to accommodate children who arrive early or stay late. Although we generally follow the academic calendar established by Chicago Public Schools, there are some variances; parents should check with a staff member at the school for more information.

Register Your Child at Passages Charter School

There is no tuition cost at Passages, although, as with all public schools, there may be costs related to books, field trips, etc. If you are interested in registering your child at Passages, please call 773-549-1052 for an appointment. Keep in mind that Passages is an elementary school that goes up to 5th grade.
