Passages Charter School

  1. Izzy SidonWhy were you interested in returning to our AmeriCorps program for a 2nd year?
During my first service year I started late because I was moving to a new state and city. That led to my decision in returning for a second year because I wanted to fulfill a full service year with the children I have and will work with from beginning to end.
  1. What motivates you as an ELL Assistant?
Being able to say that my kids have mastered a skill.
  1. If you could describe your AmeriCorps experience so far in one word or phrase, what would it be?
    Never a dull moment.
  1. What do you hope to give to the students you serve?
Consistency and more confidence. I want them to know what it’s like to have a consistent figure in their life and provide the space to make mistakes and learn but feel proud of themselves when they’ve learned a new skill.
  1. What impact do the children you serve have on you?
They always teach me something about myself, especially in keeping myself in check of everyone’s narratives and privileges that I may have that others might not.
  1. What are you most proud of over the last year and a half of service?
I’m proud of the progress my students have made, whether that be academically or behaviorally, because a simple skill might not be a big deal to anyone else but to me and their teachers it is!

Bonus questions!

  1. Where would you most like to travel to?
    Greece and Israel.
  1. What is your favorite holiday and why?
My sorority’s founder’s day, March 17th. Delta Phi Epsilon was a huge part of my life in college and the values of justice, sisterhood and love I carry with me every day.
  1. If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be?
To cook authentic Filipino dishes, I only know how to cook a couple.
