Why were you interested in joining our AmeriCorps program at AHS? I really wanted a chance to live in Chicago and serve the community around me. AHS is a great opportunity to work with an incredibly diverse and vibrant client population where I am constantly learning.
What motivates you as an Early Childhood Assistant? The kids I work with are all just really wonderful human beings that make every day a little brighter and more joyful with their constant enthusiasm and energy.
If you could describe your AmeriCorps experience so far in one word or phrase, what would it be? Wonderful and inspiring.
What do you hope to give to the students you serve? A safe, happy, nurturing environment where they know they are valued and free to explore the world around them.
What impact do the students you serve have on you? I feel so loved every day by my students and am so inspired by their constant optimism and spontaneity to truly be myself and live life to the fullest.
What are you most proud of so far in your service year? I’m most proud when I see a student who I’ve really worked with begin to come out of his/her shell and speak more–especially when English may not be his/her first language.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Homemade shrimp and tomato sauce pasta.
What is your favorite holiday and why? 4th of July because at home in Missouri, fireworks are legal and cheap.
If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be? I would love to be able to play the piano.
Founded in 1978, AHS is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping people become healthy, educated and employed. We serve all who seek our help, with special expertise in the challenges facing refugees, immigrants and other underserved communities in the greater Chicago area.
