  1. Emily HorowitzWhy were you interested in joining our AmeriCorps program at AHS?
As a recent transplant to Chicago, joining the program has given me an opportunity to build my own community and sense of self here while helping others to do the same.
  1. What motivates you as an ESL Instructor?
I am motivated every day by the determination and good spirits of my students.
  1. If you could describe your AmeriCorps experience so far in one word or phrase, what would it be?
    Reciprocal learning.
  1. What do you hope to give to the students you serve?
I hope that I can help my students to feel confident and comfortable in my classroom. I hope to create a space where it’s okay to ask questions and disagree and fail, but it’s also okay to joke and play and enjoy each other. It is my hope that they will be able to take these skills, feelings and experiences outside into the world and continue to build strong, happy lives.
  1. What impact do the students you serve have on you?
My students have impacted me in many ways — by teaching me about the world, about religion and culture, and about myself.
  1. What are you most proud of so far in your service year?
I am proud of the relationships I have forged with my students, and of their many successes, big and small. I feel thankful that I have gotten to celebrate happy moments with my students. Every driver’s license and new job and perfect spelling quiz feels like a shared victory.

My favorite holiday growing up was Tu BiShvat, the Jewish festival of trees!
  1. If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be?
