Passages Elementary School is a free, public pre-K-8th grade school, accepting new enrollments year-round. Passages offers a tailored educational program focused on high academic standards and instruction based on students’ individual needs, with a special focus on the needs of immigrant and refugee students. Chicago Public Schools awarded AHS a charter to start Passages in 2004. The school has been welcoming young scholars ever since.
How is Passages Different?
High Academic Standards
Every student is expected to perform at or above grade level. We follow many strategies to improve student achievement.
Longer School Day and School Year
Our school doors open Monday-Friday from 7:55 am to 3:30 pm. Passages offers free morning care starting at 7 am daily and a tuition-based after-school program for students daily until 5:30 pm. This reassures working parents that their children are in a safe and educational environment.
Effective and Committed Teachers with Global Perspective
Like our students, our diverse teaching staff comes from around the world and speaks many languages. More than seventy five percent of our teachers have post-secondary degrees, and we have strong support staff and members.
Small Class Size
Small student-to-teacher ratios allow for more individual attention and education that is matched to each student’s needs.
Strong Parent Network
Passages has an active parent/teacher group that supports all school activities.
Connection to Social Services at AHS
All of the programs and services offered by AHS are available to Passages’ families. We can assist parents with adult literacy classes, computer training, employment services, health education and medical assistance.
Behavioral Health Services
Children who are struggling to succeed for any reason receive individualized support through close collaboration with AHS’s Behavorial Health Program.
